34World Conference
The Olave Baden-Powell Society had a global presence at the 34th World Conference of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, held July 11-15, 2011 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Approximately 37 members of the society attended the Conference in various roles, as Board Members, Honorary Associates, delegates or guests. HRH Princess Benedikte attended the Conference and addressed the plenary session. She reminded the audience of the dream of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell that young people have a place where they could learn and grow to become leaders of the future.

Vibeke Riemer, President of OB-PS, addressed the plenary session and shared the role of OB-PS in securing funds on behalf of girls and young women. Her presentation visually showed our increasing efforts of support. OB-PS members in attendance were recognized and the audience was encouraged to meet with the members, as well as to visit OB-PS stand at the EXPO to learn more about the society.
Our purpose at the conference was to raise awareness of OB-PS and its role as a supporter of WAGGGS. This occurred both through a presentation during a plenary session and at the EXPO.
Elaine Paterson, WAGGGS Fund Development Chair, mentioned the role of OB-PS in assisting the financial security of WAGGGS during the plenary session. Elaine shared that OB-PS provided 8% of WAGGGS total income in the years 2008-2010 and plans for the next triennium strive to increase funding through our participation in the Girls Global Fund.
Approximately 20 members of OB-PS staffed a stand in the Expo hall. The display showcased the history of the society as well as funding given to girls and young women to attend the Young Women’s World Forum, the World Conference, and other leadership opportunities. Attendees to the stand were invited to participate in a quiz and two lucky participants earned an Anne Scott scholarship to attend an international seminar.
OB-PS members attending the conference benefited by increasing their knowledge of WAGGGS and heard first hand from participants the profound impact that WAGGGS had in their lives. There were moving testimonies of personal growth and leadership development obtained through participation in seminars and international sessions. OB-PS members left the conference more dedicated than ever of the life-changing opportunities we are fortunate to fund.
