2006-2007 New training centre in Benin and new units in Zimbabwe
Traduction à suivre
We had two projects over 2006-2007. One was to build a training centre in Benin – £ 5000, and the second, in Zimbabwe, was to provide funding for leaders to visit the provinces and start new units – also £5000. We are pleased to announce that thanks to the generosity of our members, both these projects are now fully funded.
Benin
It is one of the poorest countries in the world. There is a lot of poverty, unemployment and associated issues with street children and child trafficking. Benin has a literacy rate of 32%, with the status of most women being illiterate. Only 10% of girls are in full-time secondary education.
The plan of the Association des Guides du Bénin is to build a multi-purpose room containing five workshops for sewing, literacy, decoration, domestic help and information technology, plus some accommodation. The aim of the project will be to give the young women a trade, and also to further their general knowledge, IT training and literacy.
It is anticipated that this will lead to a greater awareness of others for Girl Guides, and ultimately, the establishment of new units particularly in rural areas. The girls who have been trained will serve as leaders in the new units which will enable Guiding to reach all areas and regions of the country to help to increase membership. Zimbabwe
They received their independence in 1980 but in recent years, the country has experienced political unrest. Zimbabwe is experiencing food shortages, high inflation, an unemployment rate above 70 percent and shortages of foreign currency and fuel. More than 80 percent of Zimbabweans are living below the poverty line, as food, security and access to quality health services decline.
Most of the young girls and women were displaced and sent back to rural areas, and therefore, units in towns were displaced.
This project has, as a main goal, to visit provinces and start new units, open the lapsed ones, and help young leaders to be more involved by making decisions. Young leaders will help set up youth groups and actively be involved in the management of the Association.
Orientation sessions will be introduced to make girls, young women and leaders aware of the importance of being a volunteer. It is hoped that this will increase the number of girls and leaders by 250 each year. Girls and young women will directly benefit as well as the community they live in.
This involvement of young leaders will ensure proper succession planning. Guides in Zimbabwe will increase in number, thus, the organization will grow. This will promote Girl Guiding especially in rural areas where Guiding activities are popular.
